Developmental Milestones for Babies

New moms and dads often wonder what to expect next and how to know if their baby’s development is on target. Instead of focusing too much on developmental milestones, however, it’s important to remember that babies all develop at their own pace.

Your baby will develop at her own pace. Most babies reach certain milestones at similar ages. However, it's not unusual for a healthy, “normal” baby to fall behind in some areas or race ahead in others.

The following milestones are only guidelines. Your baby's health care provider will evaluate your baby's development at each well-baby visit. Remember: Always talk to your child's health care professional if you think your baby is lagging behind.

Baby Development: 3 Months

- Smiles during interaction

- Movement with a pupose

Baby Development: 4 Months

- Starts to laugh

- Reaches out for objects

Baby Development: 6 Months

- Starts to sit

Baby Development: 6-9 Months

- Starts to crawl

Baby Development: 1 Year

- Walking begins
