Different Feeding Positions

What breastfeeding positions can I use to breastfeed my baby? There are lots of comfortable breastfeeding or nursing positions that you can learn with your baby.

Cradle Hold: This traditional hold has your baby lying tummy to your tummy horizontal across your breasts facing the breast they are feeding from. Use the opposite arm from the breast you are feeding from to support you baby and keep them close to your body. You can support that arm with your other arm or use your spare arm to support your breast if you like.

Rugby Hold or Underarm Hold: The rugby hold is good if you are feeding twins at the same time or if you have very big breasts. It can also be useful if your baby is refusing to feed from one breasts. If you bring them to that breast from the underarm position, they will often feed happily as the baby’s neck can turn in a comfortable way. With the rugby hold you hold your baby with the arm under the breast. In this under breast position they can snuggle in close to your side and feed from below.

Biological Nurturing Breastfeeding: Biological nurturing position allows the baby to find and feed from the breast themselves. If you lie back with your baby lying on your tummy they will use their arms and body to root and move to the breast. When your baby feels the nipple they will gape and latch on.
