Atrial Septal Defect During Pregnancy

When we successfully delivered a baby boy in a high risk pregnancy.  A 30 year old woman, 8 months into her pregnancy visited us some time back with constant cough and severe breathing issues, her body was unable to maintain the oxygen saturation. Looking into her history we found out that she had had 2 normal deliveries prior to this one making these symptoms very unnatural.

On further diagnosis, we found out that she was suffering from ASD (Atrial Spetal Defect) or more commonly known as the hole in the heart. The pregnancy had just complicated her condition causing her to develop the Eisenmenger's Syndrome.  The Eisenmenger's Syndrome is a condition where the lungs don't receive adequate blood from the heart, causing the body to not get the oxygen it requires.

The patient was then immediately admitted to the ICU and treated by a term of our obstetrician, cardiologist, anaesthesiologist and physician. Once her condition was stabilized, we delivered her baby through an emergency cesarean.

The healthy baby boy was supervised in the NICU post-delivery and the paient was moved to the ICU for recovery. She was observed for 2 days keeping check on any further complications or pains and then transferred to the ward from where she was discharged. The baby and mother are both doing well today

Congenital heart diseases account  to 25% of maternal deaths, Eisenmenger's Syfrome falls in the high risk category with severe cardiac and neonatal compicatioms. Therefore, require special care. Don't neglect what is important, visit your doctor today.
