Breastfeeding Difficulties: How to Prevent and Heal Sore Nipples?

A deep latch allows baby to drink effectively and helps prevent and heal sore nipples. Begin with mom's position. Sit with feet elevated and in a reclined position. If sitting on a couch sit as though you are preparing to watch a movie. It is normal to feel hungry and/or thirsty while nursing. Have a drink and snack close by.

Skin to skin contact may help your baby stay more alert while nursing. Turn baby toward you. Ear, shoulder, and hip are all in a line. Tuck the baby's bottom under the opposite breast. Bring arm and elbow to lower head for more support.

If you need breast support place hand far back from aereola. Bring baby's chin to your breast. Baby will lift their chin and open wide. Bring them onto breast with hand behind neck. Do not place your breast in baby's mouth like bottle feeding.

Once baby is latched you no longer need to support your breast.Use your now free arm to support the baby's head with your elbow and pulling baby closer with your arm. Tuck a pillow under your arm for extra support. This allows you to nurse with one hand free. If you continue to feel pinching or biting, break the latch and begin again.

Side Lying Nursing:

- Turn far to your side.

- Nipple about 1"-2" above bed.

- Have a partner bring baby close and help position them.
