Coping with a Sick Baby

It can be a real challenge, caring for a sick baby. What you want to remember is to trust your instincts. You know your baby best. So if you're worried in any way you need to contact your GP or speak to your health visitor. It's best to do this sooner rather than later, especially if your baby is under 3 months of age.

What can you do to help your baby? To keep your baby comfortable when he's not feeling very well? One of the important things is to make sure baby can have breast or bottle feeds as normal.

So continue with the feeds whenever your baby wants to feed, allow your baby to feed. The other thing is to keep your baby comfortable, make sure your baby is not too hot and not too cold and change your baby's nappy on a very regular basis, maybe more frequently than normal, so your baby is very comfortable.

The other thing is as well, is to make sure you know how to take your baby's temperature, there are lots of different thermometers on the market that are very easy to use, again keep an eye on their temperature when it goes up and maybe when it starts to fall a little bit.

That can be some reassurance for you. The other thing is as your baby gets that little bit older, you can maybe use Calpol or Nurofen (for kids) these are medicines intended for young babies. Again, take some advice from your pharmacist, make sure you are using the right medicines for the right age of baby or child, that's really important.

And lastly, make sure that you keep track. Keep a note of when you give medicines to baby so that you remember when you gave the last dose, when you're getting tired and baby is not feeling too well you can easily forget.

So keep all of the details to hand, and also any worries or concerns, just speak to somebody - call up the doctor, speak to your health visitor, and if you're very worried do seek advice straight away.
