Test Tube Baby: In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilization, is when an embryologist combines an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish for fertilization. The video begins by describing the structure and parts of the female reproductive system and goes on to describe the ovulation process from the ovary to the fallopian tube.

The conditions for pregnancy are then discussed along with the fertilization process where the sperm and ovum unite. The embryo then travels to the uterus where implantation takes place and forms the placenta that acts as the bridge between the mother and child.

There are five steps in the IVF procedure:
- Stimulate the ovaries in order to develop healthy eggs
- Collect the healthy eggs (this process is called egg retrieval)
- Collect and test the sperm
- Combine the eggs and sperm in the laboratory, providing the correct environment for fertilization and embryo growth.
- Transfer the embryos into the uterus (the egg retrieval and transfer of embryos are done by a reproductive endocrinologist)
