Tips on Sleep: How to Settle and Soothe Your Baby

It may sometimes be very tiring and difficult to make your baby sleep. If that is the case, keeping calm will comfort your baby and help him relax.
 
In times of uneasiness, some of your behavior make him cry, and some others comfort him. The first thing a parent should do is to learn about babies’ behavior in this context.
 
Sleep and Settling (To Settle a Tired Baby)
- Look for tired signs-jerky movements, fists clenched, turning head from side to side, staring into space, grizzling.
- Wrap baby firmly but not too tight.
- Pat and/or rock baby in bassinette or cot.
- Make a quiet 'ssshhh' sound or sing softly
- Try feed, sleep, play routine.
- If baby doesn't have a sleep pattern by 3 months, or if parents feel overwhelmed, seek help.
 
Reducing the Risk of SIDS
- Put baby on their back to sleep
- Sleep baby with their face uncovered.
- Baby's feet at the bottom of the cot.
- Australian safety standards.
- Tuck in bed clothes, so the bedding isn't loose.
- Use light blankets, no quilts or doonas.
- Keep pillows, toys and cot bumpers out of the cot.
- Use a firm, clean mattress.
- Keep a smoke free environment.
