Baby Health: When to Worry About Coughs and Colds?

You know your baby will get his first cold at some point, but that doesn't make it any easier. You probably already know that colds and cough medications aren't recommended for children under age 6 and can even be harmful. So try these natural remedies instead.

If your child is having a hard time breathing through his nose, use a bulb suction to gently extract the mucus. If he's all stuffed up and the mucus is dry, put a few saline drops in one nostril at a time to soften the mucus first.

You'll wanna run a cool mist humidifier too. The moist air will help him breathe and relieve his cough while he sleeps. It's also really helpful to run a hot shower and sit with your baby in a steam. It will loosen up mucus in his nose and chest.

Keep him hydrated. Fluids help loosen mucus in the nose and throat, so offer him a bottle or the breast as often as you can. If your child is over 1 year, honey is a good cough suppressant. And try to remember that every cold is building his immune system so he'll be stronger and healthier down the road.
