Diabetes During Pregnancy

Diabetes is a condition that causes a person’s blood sugar level to become too high. The amount of sugar in the blood is usually controlled by a hormone called insulin, which is produced by the pancreas (a gland behind the stomach).

As a woman enters pregnancy she may have existing risk factors, develop problems during pregnancy such as gestational diabetes and/or develop problems in labor. Being aware of issues at the outset helps everyone to be more prepared.

Pregnancy in women with type 1 or type 2 diabetes usually results in a normal delivery with no effects on the mother’s or the child’s long-term health. However, poorly controlled blood glucose levels during pregnancy can have long-term effects for mother and baby, as well as complications during delivery.
