How Much Weight Should You Put on During Pregnancy?

Caloric intake must be increased to ensure proper development of the fetus during pregnancy. The amount of weight gained varies among women. Insufficient weight gain can compromise the health of the fetus and cause preterm, or premature, birth.

Likewise, excessive weight gain can pose risks to the mother and the fetus, cause labor complications, or increase the risk of having a Cesarean delivery, etc. Women who are overweight may choose to plan a healthy diet and exercise regimen to help control the amount of weight they gain.
