Constipation in Pregnancy

Constipation is actually one of the more common symptoms that I see in the office, of pregnancy. It's often surprising when I ask the patient about it, that they're wondering what exactly the physical therapist is going to do when it comes to constipation.  But, we definitely have a few tricks up our sleeve when it comes to that.

We talk about behaviors and water intake, and also just a bowel program that can definitely have a great impact on the ability to have bowel movements. And, as we all know, if we can have a good bowel movement, and not an avoid excessive straining, we avoid hemorrhoids. Which is also something that women will encounter in pregnancy from time to time.

Constipation can definitely be affected by lifestyle changes, including dietary changes, intake in fluid, particularly water. Also exercise can have a real positive impact on the ability to have a bowel movement.
