First Trimester: What Happens to Your Unborn Baby?

During the first 8 weeks of pregnancy, your baby is known as an embryo. Your baby's head grows quickly during this stage accounting for about half of their total size and they soon have a recognizable face with eyes, nose and a mouth, all visible by the end of your first trimester.

Arm and leg buds appear and their bones and muscles begin to form. Your baby's bones are still soft but by the end of your 2nd month, they'll have tiny hands and feet with little red fingers and toes at the end of them. From the first month, their heart begins to form and feet and from 6 to 7 weeks, this could be picked up from an ultrasound scan.

Your baby's nervous system is also beginning to develop and their brain and spinal cord begin to form along with their intestines, liver, kidneys, lungs and genitals. And my, how they grow! After 4 weeks, your baby is about 5 millimeters long but by the end of the 2nd month, they're already about 5 and a half centimeters long.

From 8 weeks and until they're born, your baby is known as a fetus, they now have all their major systems in place. They just need to get bigger. While everything is there, your baby still has a lot of changes to go through, their skin at this stage is wrinkled and transparent and their bones and muscles are still developing.

Your baby's arms, legs, and fingers are getting longer and starting to move. And by now, their fingers and toes have completely separated and they're even growing tiny finger nails. By the end of your first trimester, your baby will be about 12 centimeters long.
